This novel sweeps us into a world of scandal and intrigue - glittering Regency England - and introduces the youngest Huxtable Stephen, the only son. Here Stephen will risk his reputation and his heart as he enters a scandalous liaison with the infamous beauty intent on seduction. But when passion turns the tables on them both, who can say who has seduced whom?

He must be wealthy, wellborn, and want her more than he wants any other woman. Those are the conditions that must be met by the man Cassandra Belmont chooses for her lover. Marriage is out of the question for the destitute widow who stands accused of murdering her husband and must now barter her beauty in order to survive.

With seduction in mind, she sets her sights on Stephen Huxtable, the irresistibly attractive Earl of Merton and London's most eligible bachelor. But Stephen's first intriguing glimpse of the mysterious, alluring Lady Paget convinces him that he has found the ideal woman to share his bed. There is only one caveat. This relationship fueled by mutual pleasure must be on his terms.

As the two warily circle each other in a sensual dance of attack and retreat, a single night of passion alters all the rules. Cassandra, whose reputation is already in tatters, is now in danger of losing the one thing she vowed never to give. And Stephen, who wants Cassandra more than he has ever wanted any woman, won't rest until she has surrendered everything - not as his mistress - but as his lover and wife.

Seducing an Angel Huxtable Series Book 4 (Audible Audio Edition) Mary Balogh Anne Flosnik Brilliance Audio Books

Okay, so I shed some tears as I was reading this book. If you've been reading the series, you're aware that the hero, Stephen Huxtable, unexpectedly inherited an earldom at age 17. Stephen was the beloved younger brother of three girls, Margaret, Vanessa and Katherine. Margaret had basically raised Stephen following the death of their parents. In all the prior books, Stephen was portrayed as a fine young man who grew into a fine strong man. This book gives us Stephen in the younger years of the prime of his life with enough of life's experiences that he is now fully invested in the responsibilities of the earldom and all that the position entails.

To say that Stephen has remained basically the same as it relates to his character, would be an understatement. Indeed, wealth and life among the members of high Society have not resulted in dragging Stephen down into the mud relative to his values. When a notorious widow, Cassandra Belmont, is left without a feather to fly with following the death of her husband, she has no choice but to try and seek some type of employment. The difficulties she faces are enormous, not only because she's suspected of murdering her husband, in fact, some believe she killed him with an axe and the sobriquet of "axe murderer" follows her wherever she goes.

Cassandra is one tough cookie at age 28 who is responsible for her former governess as well as her maid of all work who just happens to have a young child. What to do? Nobody will hire her and she's not qualified for any type of work anyway. Pressed beyond all measure, she decides she will crash the next ball and endeavor to find a protector. She picks Stephen Huxtable.

Although Stephen does follow Cassandra home, he's like nobody she's ever known. In fact, Stephen is quite unlike any hero type I've ever run into in these books. After Stephen understands Cassandra's game, he turns the game upside down and decides he will bring the notorious widow into respectability. Along the way, both Stephen and Cassandra learn some difficult lessons. But, Stephen has been the beneficiary of such a strong foundation, he is undergirded with strength and valor. Kudos to his older sister, Margaret, who gave up much of her young life to guide Stephen into adulthood. Although Cassandra is older than Stephen and fairly weary of life due to her unbelievably horrid previous marriage, she's not unreachable.

Yes, I cried some tears toward the end. Not sure I've ever shed a tear reading books in this genre before. 5 stars for this one.

Seducing an Angel Huxtable Series Book 4 (Audible Audio Edition) Mary Balogh Anne Flosnik Brilliance Audio Books Reviews

This is the story of Stephen Huxtable, Lord Merton, the youngest of the Huxtable family (three sisters one brother)who finds himself attracted to a very ineligible woman, accused of murdering her husband. On furthering his acquaintance with her, he finds that the husband, Lord Paget, was an abuser, beating her without mercy until someone ended his life. The happy ending is the discovery that Lady Paget, believed by all to have killed her husband, did not. So Stephen, who had been protecting her and betrothed himself to her, was able to proceed with the marriage in clear conscience.
As usual, Ms Balogh rends our hearts and then sews them up again in this tale of how women should never live complicated lives in the Regency era! It is a profoundly romantic book with the happy ending we always get from Ms Balogh. An enjoyable read.

Seducing an Angel, my favorite story. Final Huxtable and baby of the family Stephen Huxtable, Earl of Merton just turn 25 and not ready to settle down until he meets Cassandra Belmont, Lady Paget. She is a scandal, because everyone believes she killed her husband. Cassandra wants to takes Stephen as a lover, which doesn't work out so well. He helps her try to get her back on her feet. In the process starts to fall in love with her. However, her past baggage causes her to have trust issues. I love Stephen and his good heart in his story.
In the end they all find happy lives and marriages. Then you have Constantine Huxtable who is the "bastard" in the eyes of the law who can't inherit the earldom. Of course, everyone would like him to have a happy end too, right.
The fourth edition to her series was a wonderful love story. Having watched Stephen grow up in the previous books as a reader you could not wait for his turn at falling in love. Cassandra's haunting past, scandal and secrets could easily have prevented her from finding happiness but the good natured and loving heart of Stephen proved to be what was needed to overcome them all. I loved the way she continues to keep her other characters alive and woven into the fabric of her series. With each book you cannot help but fall in love all over again. Well done Ms Balogh. I look forward to the last installment of your series for I do not believe that Con is the devil Elliot believes him to be.
Good historical romance read/series!
I had read some Mary Balogh in the past and did like her work. When I was looking for new books or a series to read while I was traveling this series popped up on my recommended list. I’m glad it did! This was a good historical romance read. Were there parts that were predictable?…maybe, but that’s not a big deal to me, as I think it’s hard to have a completely “new” concept in historical romance now days.
Each of the books in the Huxtable quartet improves the series, in that each gives further depth to the characters as they appeared in the earlier books. At Last Comes Love, for example, explained the reason for some of Meg's attitudes and actions that just appeared to be excessively annoying in the first two titles of the series.

Stephen is a wonderful hero. I'm so tired of tortured, angsty, heroes. It's wonderful to find one who's deepest levels are the same as what appears on the surface, only more so.

I'd give this title an A-. It would be an A (there were a couple of places where I had tears in my elderly eyes) except for some of the vocabulary.

Over the more-than-a-quarter-century that I've been reading Balogh's regencies, I've noticed that she has an increasing tendency to have the protagonists think to themselves in modern psychobabble ("victim mentality" anyone?).

It's not that people in the regency era wouldn't have experienced these feelings and meditated about them. It's just that they wouldn't have used these words to the purpose, so there's the reason for the point off.

Otherwise, I'm anxiously awaiting the 5th book (Constantine Huxtable).
